The Giant Kookaburra

The Giant Laughing Kookaburra is a tribute to the contagious power of joyfulness and a celebration of the strength of the human spirit. Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM created the 4m tall sculpture to bring laughter and smiles to the faces of people all over the world.

As an artist, educator, community development professional and mindfulness trainer, he knows all too well the importance of lifting people’s spirits and connecting hearts, when faced with changes and challenges.

It soon became apparent that Dr Daliri’s act of service had struck a chord with audiences all over the world when a video of its maiden trip quickly went viral.

“Laughter is therapeutic and a kookaburra’s laugh is contagious; everyone joins in and I want to drive around to cheer up the whole town.”

About the Giant Kookaburra

The Giant Kookaburra was built by Queensland artist, Dr Favardin Daliri OAM, for the not-for-profit community organisation the Townsville Intercultural Centre (TIC).

For the last 40 years, the Townsville Intercultural Centre has been on a mission to enhance social cohesion and racial harmony within all communities throughout Queensland.

The Giant Kookaburra has been built as a symbol of the TIC’s commitment towards building social cohesion, harmony and Unity in Diversity.

The huge, cackling sculpture came about when Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM found himself with a lot of free time on his hands during the Coronavirus lockdown. While many of us were binging Netflix series, Dr Daliri got to work creating his most impressive masterpiece yet and was on a mission to make people smile during such uncertain times!

Since being created the Giant Kookaburra has gained a huge amount of worldwide media attention, and has been featured on CNN, SBS, ABC, The Guardian and The New York Times.
